I Lost 47 lbs. in My 47th Year with Just a Few Changes…
I’m 47 y.o. and I had a weight problem for the last 12 years – exactly the same amount of time I’d been a wine and food professional running my own company in Washington, D.C. – TasteDC (www.tastedc.com).
As you can imagine, it’s very difficult staying in shape and keeping weight off when you teach wine classes, chocolate classes and I’ve organized over 200 cooking classes. Food and wine (and beer, and Scotch, and sake..) were always around me. I ballooned from about 185 lbs. to between 210 and 220 lbs – and I’m 5’ 9” tall, not a good thing!
As you often hear from people overweight, I lost the same 10 lbs. probably a 100 or more times. I had to
break the cycle of going on a diet for 2 weeks, losing 10 lbs. and then “taking a break” and gaining it all back. My conclusion is I had to make a lifestyle change.
I knew I had to eat less, but I didn’t want to give up my 2 to 3 glasses of red wine per day. My cholesterol was a bit high, but I didn’t want to give up butter, nuts, meat and the things I really enjoyed eating. I started my “change” on March 1st, 2009, and by August, I had lost 47 lbs. (I’ve kept it off too).
In a nutshell, I did three things:
1) Fixed my hunger/overeating problem by getting motivated (I used a relaxation/hypnosis tape that I purchased on Amazon – I play it for 40 minutes every day with a 3 PM power nap),
2) I eat 3 meals a day which are way more flavorable, smaller, and go with a glass or two of wine (lunch and dinner, anyway!) – but I virtually gave up sugar and flour. I eat almost all whole foods like beans, brown rice, eggs, cheese, vegetables – nothing pre-made,
3) I exercise 2 or 3 times a week VERY intensely, but VERY short duration (45 minutes to 1 hour, no longer) at a gym with a Personal Trainer once a week and I go to a boxing class once or twice a week.
I actually work out less time than I did when I was overweight, but way more intensely and intelligently. I get more sleep than before, and the relaxation/hypnosis tape helped with that.
Wow…
Wasn’t that a great weight loss story? Good job Charlie!
